Why retiring 3G strengthens Canada’s business connectivity

A businessman is using a smartphone on Bell's mobile network.

Delivering the best possible network experience for our customers is a core commitment here at Bell. That means continually evolving our infrastructure to help support the growing demands of modern business – faster speeds, stronger performance, higher reliability and advanced security. A key part of that evolution is retiring our legacy 3G network beginning March 2027.

Why 3G needs to be retired

For many years, 3G played an important role in enabling mobile communications and early IoT applications. But as business needs have advanced, 3G has reached the limits of what it can support. Today’s cloud-based tools, real-time analytics, automation, and video-rich applications require far more capability than 3G was designed to deliver.

There are several reasons why retiring 3G is essential:

      • Spectrum efficiency: Wireless technologies operate on specific frequency bands, and spectrum is a limited national resource. The spectrum used for 3G can be deployed far more efficiently by LTE and 5G, which deliver significantly better speed, performance and capacity. Reallocating this spectrum ensures the network can support the scale and sophistication of modern business operations.
      • Incompatibility with modern technologies: 3G relies on outdated radio access technologies that cannot coexist with LTE or 5G on the same frequencies without causing interference. Think of spectrum like lanes on a highway: when 3G occupies a lane, LTE and 5G cannot use it to operate at full capability.
      • Refarming spectrum for improved performance: Discontinuing 3G allows Bell to reassign spectrum bands to LTE and 5G. This can deliver significant benefits, including faster speeds, lower latency, stronger security and improved reliability across Canada.

Building for the future

Because spectrum is limited and tightly regulated, continuing to operate 3G would consume valuable low and midband frequencies that are urgently needed to support these advanced services. Reallocating this spectrum ensures the network can meet the demands of businesses that depend on fast, secure and resilient connectivity.

Retiring 3G also enables deeper investment in next-generation infrastructure, ensuring our network evolves in line with global standards and the needs of a digital-first economy. This shift is essential to support emerging technologies such as AI-powered automation, advanced IoT deployments and mission-critical mobile applications.

Positioning businesses for what’s next

Discontinuing 3G is more than a technological upgrade, it’s a strategic move that strengthens Canada’s connectivity foundation. As organizations accelerate their digital transformation, the network supporting them must be ready for the next generation of applications and innovation.

By moving to LTE and 5G, businesses can maintain continuity today while preparing for the opportunities ahead.
